Dr. Elahe Hessamfar has got her Ph.D. in divinity. She is a public speaker and has written several articles. She has written a book called: “In the fellowship of His suffering”. This book is about the Biblical interpretation of mental illness with an emphasis on schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a very complex condition. Even if you talk to psychologists, they will confirm that the root cause of this illness has not yet been diagnosed. In general, people who suffer from this condition hear voices talking to them and see very weird pictures. Their thoughts are not orderly or regular. They have strange behaviors which are manifested in the way they get dressed too. Some have strange sensations in their bodies too. In general, there are different symptoms in different people, but the most common ones are the voices they hear and the strange pictures they see.

Based on Dr. Elahe’s research, the environment these people are brought up and the traumas they have experienced in their lives, if undealt with, can manifest themselves in these difficult symptoms. Unfortunately, many people think that this is a brain-related illness. However, it is much beyond a brain disorder.

Dr. Elahe’s daughter, Helia is a very kind and sweet Christian girl. When she was graduated from college at age 22, she was about to get engaged. She faced some difficult situations around that time. Following that she became ill. Her parents took her to different doctors and she was given many medications. However, things got worse. The doctors could not diagnose her problem properly. Dr. Elahe ended up resigning from her job so that she could look after her. Four or five years later she became catatonic. Her body would freeze in a certain position for several days and she could not go to the toilet and would make a mess in the bed. Her mum would spend days and nights alongside her and would cry out to God and would look after her. Three years later, one day Helia felt a bit better and she did not have those catatonic feelings anymore. She was able to use the toilets and would walk. This was a very good news to her parents. When she came to her senses, she would not take any more medications and as a family, they had to deal with some of its negative consequences. Since that time, she has been able to get on with daily tasks to a certain extent, However, she is not able to go to work or live on her own.
